As we gear up for the final weeks of the legislative session, I have enjoyed reaching out to our young people and engaging them about their future as well as helping people who need a little extra boost, get a whole new outlook on the world.
I was thrilled to see so many young people at our first California Youth Leadership Day at the California State Fair. We sought out to engage kids and get them thinking about their future. So, what better way to do that than combining the future with the FUN of the state fair, right in the middle of their summer break. It was wonderful to see the participation from kids as they learned about the many opportunities in front of them. It was also a great moment earlier this summer when my office delivered prescription eyeglasses to people who have been going without for so long. Please check out the items in the newsletter for more information on both events.
Also, a couple decisions from the U.S Supreme Court (SCOTUS), have made this a landmark summer. With marriage equality finally the law of the land, SCOTUS ruled that love means love and every family must be valued and respected under the law. SCOTUS also rejected efforts to destroy affordable health care, thereby reaffirming what we know to be true: that health care should be affordable and available to everyone, not just the privileged few.
Thank you for reading my e-newsletter, and I look forward to hearing from you! Please feel free to share your priorities with me. You can reach my office by phone at (916) 262-2904 or by email at Senator.Pan@senate.ca.gov.

The dinners are family style and are created by one of our regions favorite chefs. On August 27th, Dr. Pan will host the Dig in Dinner which will be created by renowned chef, Patrick Mulvaney! It will be a very special dinner made from ingredients available at the market, literally steps away from your table. For more information, go to: http://www.westsacramentofarmersmarket.com/dig-in/
Community Advisory Committee
Dr. Pan brought together dozens of community-based organizations and groups that represent the diversity of the 6th Senate District, at his first Community Advisory Committee in late June at the Federal Courthouse. The Community Advisory Committee is bringing groups together that represent the many geographical communities of the 6th Senate District as well as cultural leaders, labor unions, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, health care advocates, youth groups, and many more. Dr. Pan hopes to collaboratively tackle issues and solve problems and draw upon the expertise of people and groups who are on the front lines in our communities. For more information about Dr. Pan's Community Advisory Committee, please contact email@example.com
VSP Glasses Delivery
Many people can't afford routine eye exams and eyeglasses, and Dr. Pan was thrilled to work with Vision Service Plan's mobile eye care clinic to provide that care to more than 300 people in our community. Earlier this month, the eyeglasses were delivered and Dr. Pan is grateful to VSP for helping our community see a little more clearly.
California State Fair
The California State Fair truly has something for everyone, and since it's right in our own backyards, it presents a unique opportunity for our kids over their summer break. Bringing our young people together to learn about the many opportunities they have was the inspiration behind Dr. Pan's sponsorship of Youth Leadership Day at the State Fair where 3,000 middle school and high school students got in for free! On July 13th, area kids had a great day at the fair where they participated in a special youth rally featuring the wonder of world-renowned performance artist David Garibaldi (pictured with Dr. Pan above) and joined in a scavenger hunt for prizes. The young people also learned about college financial aid resources and career exploration. Many organizations came together to make the day a success, including: the Community College Foundation, California Student Aid Commission, Green 360, and the Girl Scouts.
Dr. Pan was on hand at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Sacramento Observer exhibit at the state fair, which honored Dr. William Lee and the Lee family for the incredible impact they have had on our region. In the special display, the paper was recognized for its pioneering work and service to Sacramento and the place they have held on the national stage for the last 53 years.
Father's Day at the Car Museum
Dr. Pan helped fellow dads celebrate Father's Day and create some special memories with free rides in classic cars at the California Automobile Museum in Old Sacramento. Dads were offered free admission all day long and everyone in the family got to enjoy special exhibits, root beer floats, delicious BBQ and some beautiful classic cars. If you missed the event, you can still check out the museum and see some beautiful classic cars at this very special museum. For more information, go here: http://www.calautomuseum.org/
The Fight Against Cancer
Dr. Pan was honored late last month by the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Action Network at an awards ceremony for his work against cancer. The groups called out Dr. Pan's work to increase care for cancer during California's implementation of the Affordable Care Act as well as being a passionate advocate for tobacco control. Dr. Pan is authoring SB 591 this year in the legislature to curb tobacco usage among kids. Earlier this month Dr. Pan joined with the California Black Health Network (CBHN) as they organized the Sacramento Fit-Fest. It was a free, citywide, community-based event that offered a variety of screenings, body weight analysis, nutritional assessments, eye screenings, dental screenings, tips on proper exercise along with other prevention and wellness tools. Many people from throughout the city got the help they need to set themselves on the course for a healthier lifestyle, Dr. Pan was proud to be a part of the event. If you want more information on the CBHN and the incredible resources they provide to our community, check out their website, here: http://www.cablackhealthnetwork.org/
