Dr. Richard Pan Responds to Expanded Access of COVID-19 Vaccine to Children
SACRAMENTO, CA –Dr. Richard Pan, pediatrician, state senator and author of California’s vaccine laws, made the following statement today as the Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine is approved for young children and becomes available at doctor’s offices, pharmacies, school vaccine clinics and other sites:
“Approval of a COVID-19 vaccine for children 5-12 years with the strong recommendation of two independent panels of experts brings hope to families that a safe and effective vaccine is finally available to protect their children from the novel coronavirus. COVID-19 has proven to be a serious disease in children that has already killed over 600 children and can cause long-term symptoms in infected people, including brain injury. In addition, unvaccinated children have been identified as potential vectors of disease spreading infection to others including vulnerable people living in the same household. Vaccination reduces the risk of serious disease and death and reduces disease transmission.
Physicians across our great country are choosing to vaccinate their own children and eager to deliver life-saving vaccines to patients. To protect your child and your family, get your child vaccinated against COVID before the holidays. If you have questions, talk to your child’s doctor and look up credible sources including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
