Dr. Richard Pan Applauds Governor’s COVID-19 Vaccine School Mandate as a Minimum Safety Standard

October 1, 2021

SACRAMENTO, CA – Dr. Richard Pan, pediatrician, state senator and author of California’s vaccine laws, made the following statement today regarding the Governor’s announcement creating a COVID-19 vaccine school mandate:

“As a pediatrician and parent, I applaud the Governor for requiring the COVID-19 vaccine for students and teachers when the vaccines receive FDA approval for students aged 12 to 15.

Students who cannot be vaccinated because of age or medical condition and students who are at-risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are protected when the people around them are vaccinated. In addition, education is disrupted when students are quarantined at home because of exposures and outbreaks and valuable school time and funds must be taken away from education to control COVID when students remain unvaccinated.

Given their responsibility for education and student safety, school districts should consider taking further steps regarding vaccination and other requirements to keep their students safe, but this important state order by the Governor establishing a minimum safety standard for California schools. I look forward to working with the Governor on necessary legislation on vaccinations to keep our children safe in school when the legislature returns.”
