Dr. Richard Pan Speaks on Supreme Court Decision on the Census

October 13, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Dr. Richard Pan, state senator and Chair of the Senate Select Committee on the 2020 United States Census issued the following statement after the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump administration to halt field operations for the 2020 census:

"Our Constitution calls for a count of all people residing in the United States every ten years as a foundation of our democracy, and today’s Supreme Court ruling is enabling President Trump to undermine this foundation by preventing an accurate count as previously recommended by U.S. Census experts.  California is committed to a complete count of Californians to ensure our state receives our fair share of representation and federal funding, and this Supreme Court emergency stay overturning a district court decision will negatively impact our country for at least the next decade.”
