Dr. Richard Pan, Author of California Legislation to Boost Vaccination and Restore Community Immunity, Makes Statement on Withholding Flu Vaccines at Border Detention Camps

August 20, 2019

Sacramento, CA— Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and the State Senator that authored SB 277 in 2015 and SB 276 currently to ensure more children are vaccinated from preventable diseases, made the following statement flowing the announcement that U.S. won’t be vaccinating migrant families in holding centers ahead of this year’s flu season:

“Withholding the flu vaccine to migrants detained at border camps is yet another violation of human rights and will lead to a public health crisis in border communities. In addition to migrants catching influenza and potentially dying preventable deaths, staff and other visitors to the camps are also at risk when the flu begins to spread. Denying basic preventive care to human beings in our country is contrary to American values and hurts both migrants and American citizens.  I call on the Trump administration to reverse this tragic and inhumane decision that will spread disease in our border communities.”
