Dr. Richard Pan Speaks on Federal Court Blocking Census Citizenship Question

January 15, 2019

SACRAMENTO – Dr. Richard Pan, state senator and Chair of the Senate Select Committee on the 2020 United States Census issued the following statement after a federal judge struck down the Trump Administration’s attempt to use the 2020 Census as a political tool to prevent diverse communities from participating in the census.

"I am pleased that a federal judge in New York struck down the Trump administration’s attempt to undermine the U.S. Constitution by discouraging entire communities from being counted in the 2020 Census. Today’s court ruling is a victory for everyone that believes in democracy and the purpose of our country’s founders. In the ruling, the federal judge noted that ‘hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of people will go uncounted in the census if the citizenship question is included,’ which undermines the Constitution’s requirement to count every resident of the United States. It is clearly in the interest of California and our entire country to have an accurate census.”
