Million Meals Summer
No child should ever go hungry, particularly in a state that produces nearly half of our nation’s fruits and vegetables. Yet every day, children in our own backyard don’t know where their next meal will come from.
In Sacramento County, on average 1.9 million free or reduced price lunches are served each month while school is in session. However, in July, that number drops to 164,912 lunches served. That is less than 10 percent of the lunches served to low-income children during the school year.
My office is working with a growing coalition to feed children in the Sacramento region a Million Meals this Summer to ensure no child goes hungry when school is not in session.
