Senate District 6 Unsung Hero
Tell us a little about yourself:
My name is Leah Nelson. I am 10 years old. I live in West Sacramento with my mom, dad, and younger brother CJ. I am starting the 5th grade. My favorite subject in school is writing. In the future I hope to attend and graduate from Stanford University. In my free time I like to play basketball and I also enjoy listening to music.
How are you making a difference in your community?
This summer I started BecuzIcare. The way it works is that a person gets a bracelet (they can either make their own and attach our message or we can send them one). We encourage people to do nice things for others and once they do, they should pass the bracelet, with the tag, to that person. This encourages them to continue “paying it forward”. We also want people to share their stories on our Facebook and Twitter page @becuzIcare11.
What inspires your community efforts?
I don't like hearing about issues in the world such as people being mean to other people because of how they look, people bullying each other and being all-around rude. I think these behaviors lead to people being sad and mad. I want people to be nice to each other and show that we all have value in the world. I want a world of peace and happiness.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am proud I have changed the life of many people by showing them what the future could look like if everybody was kind. I am very proud to have either handed out or mailed out nearly 4,000 bracelets.
Who is YOUR hero?
I have two heros: Malala Yousafzai and Rosa Parks. I like them because they stood up for what they believed in.
What have you struggled most with in your life and how did you overcome it?
I have struggled with talking to new people in my life. Even before I started BecuzIcare, I was worried about sharing my ideas with people I do not know. This project taught me that people won't always think your ideas are weird.
What is one problem in our community that you wish you could fix?
I want people to stop complaining about the past and fix the future.
What are your favorite hobbies, or things to do?
I like listening to music, playing and watching basketball and making bracelets, of course! My favorite WNBA teams are the Dallas Wings and The Los Angeles Sparks. My favorite basketball players are Skylar Diggins, Candace Parker and Maya Moore. My favorite NBA players are Demarcus Cousins and Draymond Green. My favorite musicians are Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake and Kanye West. I also enjoy travelling to my favorite vacation spot: Disney's Aulani.
