Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg explains SB 202

September 20, 2011

During his weekly interview on KFBK, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg explains why SB 202 represents a fairness issue, requiring all signature-qualifying initiatives to be placed on a general election ballot where voter turnout is highest instead of on a primary ballot. “These initiatives, as you know, have profound impact on California,” explained Steinberg. “It just doesn’t seem fair that those initiatives would be heard during a primary season where the voter turnout is always, always lower. And by the way, it’s not Democrats or Republicans, because when there’s a Democrat in the presidency then you have a Republican primary and that June turnout might benefit people who lean more conservative. On the other hand, if there’s a Republican in the White House the electorate might be more Democratic which would favor a more progressive initiative. So it can go either way.” Listen to the interview here.
