Dr. Richard Pan Responds to Little Hoover Commission’s Review of Denti-Cal program

Dr. Pan requested Little Hoover Commission Review how the state provides access to dental care for California children

April 4, 2016

Sacramento – Following a 2014 State Auditor’s report that found deficiencies in access and oversight of the state’s Denti-Cal program, Dr. Richard Pan asked the Little Hoover Commission to undertake a review of the program, which was recently completed and released. Dr. Pan responded with the following statement:

“As a pediatrician who has cared for children on Medi-Cal for over 17 years, I have witnessed the harm caused to children by long-standing deficiencies in Denti-Cal. I am grateful to the Little Hoover Commission for examining and shinning a light on the dysfunctional culture in the state’s Denti-Cal program and the need for significant reforms in this very important program. I agree that fundamental changes are needed in Denti-Call, including a change in culture that builds trust with dentists, a greater focus on prevention and a much greater alignment with the processes and payments of other dental systems in California and across the country. I appreciate the commission for recognizing the role of pediatricians and other health professionals who care for the oral health of children, and I look forward to working with my fellow pediatricians to improve the overall health of California’s children.”
