ADVISORY: Senate Democratic Caucus to present durable solution to prison overcrowding at Wednesday press conference

(Sacramento, CA) – California Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg issues the following statement in response to the California Governor’s proposal to spend over $700 million on increased prison capacity:

“I agree with the Governor’s goal to prevent the early releases of any prisoners. Along with my caucus, I do not and will not support early releases.

“The Governor’s proposal is a plan with no promise and no hope. As the population of California grows, it's only a short matter of time until new prison cells overflow and the Court demands mass releases again. For every ten prisoners finishing their sentences, nearly seven of them will commit another crime after release and end up back behind bars.

“More money for more prison cells alone is not a durable solution; it is not a fiscally responsible solution; and it is not a safe solution.

“We must invest in a durable criminal justice strategy, which reduces both crime and prison overcrowding.”

The California Senate Democratic Caucus will present a better solution to the Federal Three-Judge Panel order to reduce prison overcrowding, in a manner that is durable and responsive to the Three-Judge Panel.
